(iv) (a) Tropical : There was a tropical downpour whole night.
(b) Quiet : All the students in the classroom were quiet.
(v) Fast – Steady.

Passage – 4

The rain stops. The clouds begin to break up, the sun strikes the hill on my left. A woman is chopping up sticks. I hear the tinkle of cowbells. In the oak tree, a crow shakes the raindrops from his feathers and caws disconsolately. Water drips from a leaking drainpipe. And suddenly, clean and pure, the song of the whistling thrush emerges like a dark sweet secret from the depths of the ravine.
August 12
Endless rain, and a permanent mist. We haven’t seen the sun for eight or nine days. Everything damp and soggy. Nowhere to go. Pace the room, look out of the window at a few bobbing umbrellas. 1. June 24
The first day of monsoon mist. And it’s strange how all the birds fall silent as the mist comes climbing up the hill. Perhaps that’s what makes the mist so melancholy; not only does it conceal the hills, it blankets them in silence too. Only an hour ago the trees were ringing with birdsong. Through the mist Bijju is calling to his sister. I can hear him running about on the hillside but I cannot see him.

2. June 25
Some genuine early-monsoon rain, warm and humid, and not that cold high-altitude stuff we’ve been having all year. The plants seem to know it too, and the first cobra lily rears its head from the ferns as I walk up to the bank and post office.
The mist affords a certain privacy.
A schoolboy asked me to describe the hill station and valley in one sentence, and all I could say was: “A paradise that might have been.”

Word Meaning : Genuine : true = (वास्तविक), Altitude : height above the sea = (समुद्र तल से ऊँचाई), Stuff :filled tightly = (ठूस कर भरना, पदार्थ, तत्व), Ferns : a flowerless plant with feathery green leaves = (फूलरहित पौधा नुकीली पत्तियों के साथ), Paradise : heaven = (स्वर्ग)।

3. June 27
The rains have heralded the arrival of some seasonal visitors a leopard, and several thousand leeches.
Yesterday afternoon the leopard lifted a dog from near the servants’ quarter below the school. In the evening it attacked one of Bijju’s cows but fled at the approach of Bijju’s mother, who came screaming imprecations.
As for the leeches, I shall soon get used to a little bloodletting every day.

Word Meaning : Heralded : announced = (घोषणा की), Seasonal : according to weather = (मौसमी), Leopard : (तेंदुआ), Leeches: a small blood sucking worm = (जोंक), Imprecations : curses = (शाप, बददुआ)।

4. Other new arrivals are the scarlet minivets (the females are yellow), flitting silently among the leaves like brilliant jewels. No matter how leafy the trees, these brightly coloured birds cannot conceal themselves, although, by remaining absolutely silent, they sometimes contrive to go unnoticed. Along come a pair of drongos, unnecessarily aggressive, chasing the minivets away.

A tree creeper moves rapidly up the trunk of the oak tree, snapping up insects all the way. Now that the rains are here, there is no dearth of food for the insectivorous birds.

Word Meaning : Flitting :fly or move lightly and rapidly = (फुदकना),Jewels: precious stone = (कीमती ‘जवाहरात), Contrive : find a way of doing something = (उपाय निकालना), Aggressive : quarrelsome = (लड़ाकू, झगड़ालू), Trunk : main stem of a tree = (तना), Dearth : shortage = (अभाव, कमी), Snapping : to seize with a quick bite = (दांत से तेजी से पकड़ना)।

HBSE 8th Class English Solutions Honeydew Chapter 8 A Short Monsoon Diary

7. August 31
It is the last day of August, and the lush monsoon growth has reached its peak. The seeds of the cobra lily are turning red, signifying that the rains are coming to an end.

In a few days the ferns will start turning yellow, but right now they are still firm, green and upright. Ground orchids, mauve lady’s slipper and the white butterfly orchids put on a fashion display on the grassy slopes of Landour. Wild dahlias, red, yellow and magenta, rear their heads from the rocky crevices where they have taken hold.

Word Meaning: Crevices : cracks in rock or wall = (par 1 treret os art), Orchid : a kind of plant = (शतावरी का पौधा), Signifying : showing importance = (महत्त्व दर्शाते हुए), Turning : changing into = (बदलते हुए)।

8. Snakes and rodents, flooded out of their holes and burrows, take shelter in roofs, attics and godowns. A shrew, weak of eyesight, blunders about the rooms, much to the amusement of the children. “Don’t kill it,” admonishes their grandmother. “Chuchundars are lucky they bring money!”
And sure enough, I receive a cheque in the mail. Not a very large one, but welcome all the same.

Word Meaning : Rodents : gnawing animal = (दांतों से कुतरने वाला जन्तु (छडूंदर आदि), Burrows: holes made in ground = (बिल), Attics : room on roof = (अटारी), Shrew : animal who moves slowly = (छछूदर), Blunders : make foolish mistakes = (भारी गलती करना), Admonish : to reprove mildly = (धीरे से झिड़कना)।

9. October 3
We have gone straight from monsoon into winter rain. Snow at higher altitudes.
After an evening hailstorm, the sky and hills are suffused with a beautiful golden light.
January 26
Winter Rains in the Hills
In the hushed silence of the house
when I am quite alone, and my friend, who was here
has gone, it is very lonely, very quiet,
as I sit in a liquid silence, a silence within,
surrounded by the rhythm of rain,
the steady drift
of water on leaves, on lemons, on roof,

Word Meaning:Hailstorm: frozen rain drops storm = (ओलावृष्टि का तूफान), Hushed: to make silent = (खामोश करना, चुप करना), Lonely : without companion = (अकेला), Rhythm : (ताल, लय), Drift : being carried along by the currents = (बहाव)।

10. drumming on drenched dahlias and window
panes,
while the mist holds the house in a dark caress.
As I pause near a window, the rain stops.
And starts again.
And the trees, no longer green but grey,
menace me with their loneliness.
March 23
Late March. End of winter.
The blackest cloud I’ve ever seen squatted over Mussoorie, and then ithailed marbles for half an hour. Nothing like a hailstorm to clear the sky. Even as I write, I see a rainbow forming.

Word Meaning : Drenched : wet all over = (भीगा हुआ), Panes : sheet of glass in a window = (खिड़की में लगी कांच की पट्टी), Caress : loving or affectionate touch = (लाड़, दुलार), Meance : threaten = (धमकाना)।

A Short Monsoon Diary Summary in English

Ruskin Bond portrays a beautiful picture of nature and surroundings during the rainy season. On the first day of monsoon all the hills get covered with heavy fog and it appears as if the hills got concealed by the fog. Birds stop singing in this deadly silence. This early monsoon rain is warm and moist. First, cobra lily raises its head from the ferns when the author was going to the bank and post office. He describes hill station and valley as a paradise to a school boy.

With the arrival of rain, some seasonal visitors also make their entry like leopard and thousand of leeches. The leopard becomes successful into lifting a dog. There are minivets and drongos also. The season also give rise to a large number of insects and there were enough food for insectivorous birds.

In the month of August, there is a heavy tropical downpour, which leads to tinroof leakage. The author hears the tinkling of cowbells, caws of a crow who was shading raindrops from his features. During the endless rain, in mid of August, he glances from window to see late monsoon flowers and umbrellas.

On the last day of August, seeds of cobra lily were turning red which indicates that the monsoon season is going to’end. Beautiful flowers on the grassy slopes appeared to him like a fashion display.

Then the monsoon rain transforms itself into winter rain. It comes now with hailstorm. The author feels lonely in this utter silence and describes his feeling through a poem. He notices the blackest cloud over the Mussoorie and then he experiences the formation of a rainbow.
