A VISIT TO MATA VAISHNO DEVI
“Mata Vaishno Devi” is the sacred temple of the believers. It is. situated in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. Lacs of people visit this holy temple every year. The believers, the Hindus, the Muslims and the Sikhs touch the feet of the Shrine of Holy Goddess and pray for their spiritual peace.

It is surrounded by slanting hills and mountains with calmly standing green trees. Once I was fortunate to have the Darshan of this holy place. Its mountainous climb is 14 miles’ distance from Katra. Visitors go there on foot or on hired ponies. They sing beautiful tunes of worship in chorus in praise of the Goddess. They offer Parsad at her feet. I also enjoyed the climb on foot. There is a complete peace of mind. During the walk, climber’s last ounce of energy ; is spent. There was peace, gratitude and humility when I attained the height. My eyes fell on the Bhawan. The long green coloured trees gave me a feeling of my nearness to God.

I was close to nature and spirit and got joy that was conspicuous by its presence. I was undoubtedly benefited by this visit. My kind , Mata blessed me and natural hills pacified my spirit in peaceful surroundings.

Before You Read

Major H.P.S. Ahluwalia was a member of the first successful Indian expedition to Mount Everest in 1965. How did he feel when he stood on the highest point in the world? Let us hear his story in his own words-climbing the summit and, then, the more difficult task of climbing the summit within.

1. Of all the emotions which surged through me as I stood on the summit of Everest, looking over miles of panorama below us, the dominant one I think was humility. The physical in me seemed to say, “Thank God, it’s all over!”

Word Meaning:
Emotions: (भावनाएँ), Surged: arose = (उभरी), Through: across = (पार), Summit: top = (शिखर), Panorama: view of wide area = (चित्रावली), Dominant: over whelming = (छा जाने वाला), Humility: (नम्रता)। ।

2. However, instead of being jubilant, there was a tinge of sadness. Was it because I had already done the ultimate’ in climbing and there would be nothing higher to climb and all roads hereafter would lead down?

Word Meaning:
Physical: (भौतिक), Tinge: trace = (चिह्न), Ultimate: upto the last end = (अन्त तक), Hereafter: after this place = (इस स्थान से आगे)।

Word Meaning:
Overwhelmed: surrounded = (इर्द-गिर्द), Sense: feeling = (भावनाएँ), Thankfulness: gratitude = (आभार), Lasts: remains = (रहते हैं), Lifetime:for full life = (आजीवन)।

4. As I look back at life after climbing Everest I cannot help remarking about the other summitthe summit of the mind-no less formidable and no easier to climb.

Word Meaning:
Remarking: to notice = (ध्यान से देखना, टिप्पणी करना), Formidable: most powerful of all = (सर्वशक्तिशाली)।

5. Even when getting down from the summit, once the physical exhaustion had gone, I began asking myself the question why I had climbed Everest. Why did the act of reaching the summit have such a hold on my imagination?

Word Meaning:

7. All these thoughts led me to question myself as to why people climb mountains? It is not easy to answer the question. The simplest answer would be, as others have said, “Because it is there.” It presents great difficulties. Man takes delight in overcoming obstacles.

Word Meaning:
Simplest:very ordinary = (अत्यंत साधारण), Delight:joy = (खुशी),Overcoming: winning over = (जीत की ओर)।

8. The obstacles in climbing a mountain are physical. A climb to a summit means endurance, persistence and will power. The demonstration of these physical qualities is no doubt exhilarating, as it was for me also.

HBSE 8th Class English Solutions Honeydew Chapter 5 The Summit Within

9. I have a more personal answer to the question. From my childhood I have been attracted by mountains. I had been miserable, lost, when away from mountains, in the plains. Mountains are nature at its best. Their beauty and majesty pose a great challenge, and like many, I believe that mountains are a means of communion with God.

Word Meaning:
Personal: (व्यक्तिगत), Miserably: badly = (बुरी तरह), Attracted: drawn = (आकर्षित), Plains: (मैदानी क्षेत्र), Nature at its best-best form of nature (पर्वत), pose=present (प्रस्तुत करते हैं), Means of communion with God: (प्रकृति (पर्वत) व्यक्ति को ईश्वर से मिलाती है)।

10. Once having granted this, the question remains: Why Everest? Because it is the highest, the mightiest and has defied many previous attempts. It takes the last ounce of one’s energy. It is a brutal struggle with rock and ice. Once taken up, it cannot be given up halfway even when one’s life is at stake.

Word Meaning:
Mightiest: the most powerful = (अत्यंत शक्तिशाली), Defied: reject, oppose = (विरोध किया, विफल कर दिया), Previous: past = (पिछली), Attempt:efforts = (प्रयास), Brutal: wild = (जंगली), Energy: power = (शक्ति, ऊर्जा), Struggle: (संघर्ष), Half way: incomplete = (अधूरा)।

… 11. The passage back is as difficult as the passage onwards. And then, when the summit is climbed, there is the exhilaration, the joy of having done something, the sense of a battle fought and won. There is a feeling of victory and of happiness.

Word Meaning:
Passage: road = (मार्ग), Back: return = (वापसी), Forward: further = (आगे), Exhilaration:joy = (आनंद), Sense:feeling = (भावना)।

12. Glimpsing a peak in the distance, I get transported to another world. I experience a change within myself which can only be called mystical. By its beauty, aloofness, might, ruggedness, and the difficulties encountered on the way, the peak draws me to it – as Everest did. It is a challenge that is difficult to resist.

Word Meaning:
Glimpsing: observing the scenes transported = (97810), Within: inwards = (भीतर की ओर), Mystical: secret = (रहस्यमयी), Aloofness: loneliness = (एकांत), Might: power = (शक्ति), Ruggedness: unevenness = (ऊबड़-खाबड़), Encountered: faced = (सामना किया), Draws: attract = (आकर्षित करती है।)

13. Looking back I find that I have not yet fully explained why I climbed Everest. It is like answering a question why you breathe. Why do you help your neighbour? Why do you want to do good acts? There is no final answer possible.

Word Meaning:
Explained: told in details = (विस्तार से बताना), Breathe: (श्वांस लेना), Neighbour: (पड़ोसी), Acts: deeds = (कार्य)।

HBSE 8th Class English Solutions Honeydew Chapter 5 The Summit Within

14. And then there is the fact that Everest is not just a physical climb. The man who has been to the mountain-top becomes conscious in a special manner of his own smallness in this large universe.

Physical climb:the climbing with body = (शारीरिक चढ़ाई),Conscious: away = (जागरूक), Special: particular = (विशेष), Manner: (ढंग), Universe: (ब्रह्मांड)।

15. The physical conquest of a mountain is only one part of the achievement. There is more to it than that. It is followed by a sense of fulfilment. There is the satisfaction of a deep urge to rise above one’s surroundings. It is the eternal love for adventure in man. The experience is not merely physical. It is emotional. It is spiritual.

Word Meaning:
Statisfaction: contentment = (संतुष्टि), Conquest: victory = (विजय), Achievement: success = (3981fat), Fulfilment: perfection = ( qui feerfa), Urge: rising feeling of doing something = (कुछ करने की चाह), Surroundings: atmosphere = (वातावरण), Adventure:ajob full of courage and risk = (साहसिक कार्य), Emotion:full of feelings = (भावनात्मक), Spiritual: full of spirit (full of excitement) = (आध्यात्मिक)।

16. Consider a typical climb, towards the summit on the last heights. You are sharing a rope with another climber. You firm in. He cuts the steps in the hard ice. Then he belays and you inch your way up. The climb is grim.

Word Meaning:
Consider: think of = (जरा सोचिए), Typical: particular = (विशेष), Sharing: taking part = (भाग लेना), Firm: to determine = (पक्का होना), The hardice: (कठोर बर्फ), Belays:fixes a rope for ascent = (रस्सी से चढ़ाई निश्चित करता है) Grim: serious = (गंभीर)।

17. You strain every nerve as you take every step. Famous climbers have left records of the help given by others. They have also recorded how they needed just that help. Else they might have given up. Breathing is difficult.

Word Meaning:

18. You curse yourself for having let yourself in for this. You wonder why you ever undertook the ascent. There are moments when you feel like going back. It would be sheer relief to go down, instead of up.

Word Meaning:
Wonder: feel surprised = (आश्चर्य), Undertook: take up = (उत्तरदायित्व लेना), Ascent: (चढ़ाई), Moments: (क्षण), Relief:rest = (विश्राम), Instead of:in place of = (के स्थान पर), Sheer:only = (केवल, कुछ थोड़ी सी)।

19. But almost at once you snap out of that mood. There is something in you that does not let you give up the struggle. And you go on. Your companion keeps up with you. Just another fifty feet. Or a hundred, may be.

Word Meaning:
At once: very soon = (शीघ्र ही), Snap: catch = (पकड़ लेना, झपट पड़ना), Mood: feeling = (भावना), Give up: leave = (छोड़ना), Struggle:effort = (संघर्ष), Go on: continue = (जारी रखते हो), Keeps up: takes the courage to support = (साथ देने के लिए साहस करना)।

20. You ask yourself: Is there no end? You look at your companion and he looks at you. You draw inspiration from each other. And then, without first being aware of it, you are at the summit.

21. Looking round from the summit you tell yourself that it was worthwhile. Other silvery peaks appear through the clouds. If you are lucky the sun may be on them. The surrounding peaks look like a jewelled necklace round the neck of your summit.

Word Meaning:
Worthwhile:useful = (लाभकर),Silvery:of silver colour = (रुपहली), Appear: show = (प्रकट होते हैं), Necklace: a jewel worn round the neck by ladies = (महिलाओं द्वारा पहना जाने वाला आभूषण (हंसुली)।

22. Below, you see vast valleys sloping into the distance. It is an ennobling, enriching experience to just look down from the summit of a mountain. You bow down and make your obeisance to whichever God you worship.

Word Meaning:
Vast: might = (विशालकाय), Sloping: slanting = (ढलानदार), Ennobling: making one wealthy orgentle = (किसी को सज्जन बनाना), Enriching:making one’s rich = (समृद्ध बनाना), Obeisance: submission, bow down in respect as worship = (श्रद्धा से झुकना)।

23. I left on Everest a picture of Guru Nanak. Rawat left a picture of Goddess Durga. Phu Dorji left a relic of the Buddha. Edmund Hillary had buried a cross under a cairn (a heap of rocks and stones) in the snow. These are not symbols of conquest but of reverence.

Word Meaning:
Relic: remains of a holy person = (स्मृति चिह्न), Buried: dug in the earth = (पृथ्वी में गाड़ दिए), Heap: (ढेरी), Symbols: signs = (चिह्न), Conquest: victory = (विजय), Cross: (ईसा मसीह का धर्म चिह्न), Cairn: (पत्थरों और चट्टानों का ढेर), Reverence: respect = (सम्मान)।

24. The experience of having climbed to the summit changes you completely.
There is another summit. It is within yourself. It is in your own mind. Each man carries within himself his own mountain peak. He must climb it to reach to a fuller knowledge of himself. It is fearful, and unscalable. It cannot be climbed by anyone else. You yourself have to do it.

Word Meaning:
Within: inside one’s body = (मन के भीतर), Mind: (हृदय); Soul: (आत्मा), Carries: has = (रखता है), Peak: (चोटी), Fuller: complete knowledge = (सम्पूर्ण ज्ञान), Unscalable: that which cannot be climbed = (न चढ़ने योग्य), Else: other person = (दूसरा आदमी)।

25. The physical act of climbing to the summit of a mountain outside is akin to the act of climbing the mountain within. The effects of both the climbs are the same. Whether the mountain you climb is physical or emotional and spiritual, the climb will certainly change you. It teaches you much about the world and about yourself.

Word Meaning:
Act:job = (कार्य), Akin to: near = (नजदीक), Effect: (प्रभाव), Certainly: definitely = (निश्चित रूप से)।

26. I venture to think that my experience as an Everester has provided me with the inspiration to face life’s ordeals resolutely. Climbing the mountain was a worthwhile experience. The conquest of the internal summit is equally worthwhile. The internal summits are, perhaps, higher than Everest.

Word Meaning:
Venture: take risk, courage = (खतरे वाला कार्य), Provided: give me = (देना), Inspiration: urge = (उत्साह), Ordeals: difficulties = (कठिनाइयाँ), Resolutely: with form determination = (पक्का इरादा), Internal: relating to inside the body = (आंतरिक), Perhaps: possible = (संभवतः)।

Summary in English

Major H.P.S. Ahluwalia, the first successful Indian member in the Expedition to Mount Everest in 1965, describes in the following lines his observations while standing on the peak. He opens his mind frankly regarding his succession the summit.

Humility is the main emotion that surrounds him at that moment. He thanks God for its end. However, he felt sad for its having ended, to climb on further. Of course, he was happy for life time. His own self was changed. He wanted to climb his mind. It was not easy to control it but he asked himself as to why he had climbed. The feelings of climbing held him tightly. Well, it had passed. What next? He tells here that climbing presents difficulties which make him happy. The difficulties are physical. Moreover, climbing teaches a sense of toleration and will-power which delights him when he was at the top.

However, Ahluwalia had been attracted to mountains since childhood. He felt bad when away from them. Mountains are nature at best. They are a means of communication with God. People like climbing it because it was the highest and the mightiest. It had defied many attempts climbing on it is a brutal struggle with rock and ice. To climb down was an difficult as climbing up. When one reaches the top, one feels overjoyed at having won. Hence the feeling of happiness.

Now, comes the joy of looking around while on the top. One feels a change in oneself. The peak attracts Ahluwalia towards it. It is an irresistible challenge.

When at the top, one feels nearness to the infinite. It fills courage and confidence. Snows and wind in the difficult surroundings instil a determination to achieve excellence. Ahluwalia says that the world reacted to their achievement with joy. It was praised whole-heartedly. The climber is fully satisfied. Everest is just a physical climb when he gains immensely, climbing is only one part of the achievement. He gets a sense of fulfilment. There is satisfaction. It is eternal love for adventure in man. The.climb is grim. When two climbers climb together by holding rope together, they feel their need for one smother. Breathing is difficult. While going down one feels relief. We continue endlessly. Both look at one another in suspense.

Both encourage and inspire each other. They reach the top. Ahluwalia feels the climb worthwhile. At first the silvery peaks and then the bright sun. Peaks look like jewelled necklace round the neck of the summit. Below are sloping valleys. He bows down in respect for God, what so ever He is. Summary in Hindi
