Haryana Board 9th Class Maths Solutions Chapter 3 Coordinate Geometry Exercise 3.3

Question 1.
In which quadrant or on which axis do each of the points (-2, 4), (3, -1), (-1, 0), (1, 2) and (-3, -5) lie? Verify, your answer by locating them on the Cartesian plane.
Solution:
(i) In the point (-2, 4), since abscissa is negative and ordinate is positive, so it lies in the IInd quadrant.
(ii) In the point (3, -1), since abscissa is positive and ordinate is negative, so it lies in the IVth quadrant.
(iii) In the point (-1, 0), since abscissa is negative and ordinate is zero, so it lies on the negative x-axis.
(iv) In the point(1, 2), since abscissa and ordinate both are positive, so it lies in the Ist quadrant.
(v). In the point (-3, -5), since abscissa and ordinate both are negative, so it lies in the IIIrd quadrant.
Locations of the points are shown in the given figure :

Question 2.
Plot the points (x, y) given in the following table on the plane, choosing suitable units of distance on the axes.

x-2-1013
y87-1.253-1

Solution:
The pairs of numbers given in the table can be represented by the points (-2, 8), (-1, 7), (0, – 1.25), (1, 3) and (3, -1). Choosing a suitable scale 1 cm = 1 unit, the locations of the points are shown by dots in figure
