This story reflects the challenges of being a teenager, and the problems of growing up. In our life sometime such changes take place that our life becomes intolerable for us and sometime we (teenagers) want to end this life. But again we find the things change which make us enjoy the life fully. In this story the same things happen with the author. He finds himself in such an awkward situation when he joins a high school. After some days his house catches fire and he finds that his life has ended. But when his schoolmates show their concern for him, his whole vision for the life changes and he again starts taking interest in life.

After passing junior high school the author joined a high school. It was a big school. The author felt awkward during his first year of high school. He missed his old school badly. He often went to meet his old teachers. They encouraged him to get involved in school activities.
One Sunday afternoon, not long after he had started high school, he was sitting at home doing his homework. His little cat was sitting on the table. He smelt something strange. Then he noticed smoke pouring in through the seams of the ceiling. Soon the whole room was engulfed in flames. The author and his mother came out of the room.

When the debries of their burned house were being cleared off, the author came there daily hoping that his cat was somewhere to be found.

नाते मुझे जो सम्मान मिलता था को छोड़ने के पश्चात एक नए स्कूल में जाना मेरे लिए विचित्र शुरुआत थी। यह स्कूल मेरे पुराने वाले स्कूल से दुगना बड़ा था और स्थिति को मेरे लिए कष्टकारी करने वाली बात यह थी कि मेरे सभी दोस्तों को अलग हाई स्कूल में भेज दिया गया। मैं बिल्कुल अलग-थलग महसूस कर रहा था।
मुझे अपने पुराने अध्यापकों की इतनी याद आती थी कि मैं उनसे मिलने के लिए जाया करता था। वे मुझे उत्साहित करते थे कि मैं स्कूल की गतिविधियों में व्यस्त हो जाऊँ ताकि मैं नए लोगों से मिल सकूँ। उन्होंने मुझे बताया कि कुछ ही समय में मैं नए स्कूल में समायोजित हो जाऊँगा और फिर मैं अपने नए स्कूल को पुराने स्कूल से अधिक चाहने लग जाऊँगा। उन्होंने मुझसे वचन लिया कि जब वह अपने नए स्कूल को चाहने लग जाएगा तब भी उनसे मिलने आया करेगा। मुझे उनका मनोविज्ञान समझ में आ गया कि वे ऐसा क्यों कह रहे थे, तथापि मुझे उसमें कुछ राहत अवश्य मिली।
एक रविवार के दिन, जब मुझे हाई स्कूल में दाखिला लिए अधिक समय नहीं हुआ था, मैं घर पर अपने भोजन कक्ष के मेज पर बैठा अपना गृहकार्य कर रहा था। यह एक ठंडा और तेज हवा के साथ हिमपात वाला दिन था और हमने अपनी अंगीठी में आग जला रखी थी। हमेशा की तरह, मेरी लाल रंग की धारियों वाली बिल्ली मेरे कागजों के ऊपर बैठी धुरधुरा रही थी और कभी-कभी मनोरंजन के लिए मेरे पैन पर थापी मार रही थी।
वह कभी भी मेरे से दूर नहीं जाती थी। मैंने उसे तब बचाया था जब वह छोटी-सी बच्ची थी और शायद वह यह जानती थी कि उसके जीवन को बचाने के लिए मैं उत्तरदायी हूँ।
घर को सुखद और गरमाहट पूर्ण रखने के लिए माँ आग में ईंधन डालती रही। अचानक ही मुझे अजीब सी गंध का अनुभव हुआ और तब मैंने छत की दरारों में से धुएँ को अंदर आते देखा। धुआं कमरे में इतनी शीघ्रता के साथ फैल गया कि हम मुश्किल से ही कुछ देख सकते थे।

एक टोली बनाकर हम सामने वाले दरवाजे तक आए, तब हम सभी सामने वाले आंगन में भाग गए। जब तक हम बाहर आते, सारा कमरा लपटों की चपेट में आ चुका था और आग तेजी से फैल रही थी। मैं अग्निशमन विभाग के लोगों को बुलाने के लिए पड़ोसियों की ओर दौड़ा, तब मैंने अपनी माँ को घर के अंदर वापिस भागते हुए देखा।
तब मेरी माँ घर के अंदर से महत्त्वपूर्ण दस्तावेजों से भरा एक धातु का डिब्बा लेकर बाहर आई। उसने डिब्बे को बाहर आंगन में रख दिया और एक पागलों जैसी दशा में वापिस घर के अंदर दौड़ी। मैं जानता था कि वह किस चीज के लिए गई थी। जब मैं अभी छोटा था तो मेरे पिता की मृत्यु हो गई थी और मुझे यकीन था कि वह मेरे पिता की तस्वीरों और पत्रों को आग की लपटों के हवाले नहीं होने देगी। केवल ये ही चीजें बची थीं जो उसे उनकी याद दिलाती थीं। फिर भी मैं उस पर चिल्लाया, “माँ! नहीं!”
मैं उसके पीछे भागने ही वाला था तब मैंने पाया कि एक बड़े हाथ ने मुझे पीछे से रोक लिया। वह एक अग्निशमन कर्मचारी था। मैंने अभी तक यह नहीं देखा था कि पूरी सड़क अग्निशमन गाड़ियों से भर गई थी। मैं अपने को उसकी पकड़ से छुड़ाने का प्रयास कर रहा था और चीख रहा था, “आप समझते नहीं हो कि मेरी माँ अंदर है!”
उसने मुझे तो पकड़े रखा जबकि अन्य कर्मचारी घर के अंदर दौड़ गए। वह जानता था कि मैं तर्कपूर्ण ढंग से कार्य नहीं कर रहा था और यदि उसने मुझे छोड़ दिया तो मैं अंदर भाग जाऊंगा। वह सही था।
“सब ठीक से है, वे उसे ढूँढ लेंगे,” उसने कहा।
उसने मेरे ऊपर एक कंबल लपेट दिया और मुझे हमारी कार में बिठा दिया। उसके थोड़ी देर बाद, एक अग्निशमन कर्मचारी मेरी माँ को खींचकर के बाहर लेकर आया।

वह जल्दी से उसे अग्निशमन गाड़ी के ऊपर ले गया और उसके मुँह पर ऑक्सीजन का मास्क लगा दिया। मैं भागकर उसके ।
पास गया और उससे चिपक गया। इस दौरान मैंने हमेशा ही उससे बहस और घृणा की थी और वह सब कुछ उसे खोने के विचार से ही ओझल हो गई।
“वह जल्दी ही ठीक हो जाएगी,” अग्निशमन कर्मचारी ने कहा, “केवल कुछ धुआँ ही उसके अंदर गया है।” और वह वापिस आग बुझाने के लिए दौड़ गया जब मैं और मेरी माँ हैरान अवस्था में वहाँ बैठे रहे। मुझे आज भी अपने घर को जलते हुए देखने और स्वयं कुछ न कर पाने की घटना याद है।
पांच घंटे के पश्चात, आग अंततः बुझा दी गई। हमारा घर लगभग पूरी तरह से जल चुका था। लेकिन तब मुझे सूझा…मैंने अपनी बिल्ली को तो नहीं देखा। मेरी बिल्ली कहाँ थी? मैं और अधिक भयभीत हो गया, वह कहीं पर भी नहीं मिली। तब अचानक मुझे अपने नए स्कूल, अग्नि और अपनी बिल्ली का स्मरण हो आया और मैं फूट-फूट कर रोने लग गया और चिल्लाता रहा, चिल्लाता रहा। मैं काफी समय से क्षति से पीड़ित हो रहा था।
अग्निशमन कर्मचारियों ने हमें उस रात घर के अंदर नहीं जाने दिया। घर के अंदर जाना अभी भी खतरनाक था। जिंदा या मुर्दा, मैं अपनी बिल्ली के बारे में जाने बिना वहाँ से जाने की कल्पना भी नहीं कर सकता था। फिर भी मुझे जाना पड़ा। हम अपने शरीर पर कुछ वस्त्रों तथा अग्निशमन कर्मचारियों द्वारा प्रदान किए गए कंबलों के साथ अपनी कार में बैठ गए और रात्रि बिताने के लिए हम सीधे मेरे दादा-दादी के घर चले गए।
अगले दिन, सोमवार को, मैं स्कूल चला गया। जब आग लगी, तो मैंने स्कूल की वर्दी पहनी हुई थी जो मैंने उसे सुबह के समय चर्च जाते हुए पहना था परंतु मैंने जूते नहीं पहन रखे थे! मैंने गृहकार्य करते समय जूतों को उतार दिया था। वे भी अग्नि का एक और शिकार बन गए। इसलिए मुझे अपनी मौसी से टेनिस के खेल में पहने जाने वाले जूते उधार लेने पड़े। मैं स्कूल जाने की अपेक्षा घर पर क्यों नहीं रह सकता था? मेरी माँ ने इसके बारे में नहीं सुना, लेकिन मैं प्रत्येक चीज से बहुत अधिक परेशान था।
जो कपड़े मैंने पहन रखे थे वे अजीब लग रहे थे, मेरे पास न किताबें थीं और न ही गृहकार्य किया हुआ था और मेरा स्कूल का थैला जो जल चुका था। उस थैले में ही मेरा जीवन था। मैं जितना अधिक स्कूल में सही होने का प्रयास करता था, परिस्थिति उतनी अधिक खराब हो जाती थी। क्या भाग्य ने मुझे सारा जीवन निर्वासित और मूरों के रूप में जीने के लिए बनाया था? मुझे तो ऐसा ही अहसास होता था। यदि जीवन इसी प्रकार से चलना था तो मैं बड़ा होकर जीवन को संभालना नहीं चाहता था। मैं तो केवल जीवन को समेटकर मर जाना चाहता था।
स्कूल में मैं एक करुणाजनक व्यक्ति की भांति घूमता रहा। मुझे सब कुछ विचित्र लग रहा था और मुझे मालूम नहीं था कि क्या होने वाला है। जितनी सुरक्षा मुझे पुराने स्कूल, मेरे मित्रों, मेरे घर और मेरी बिल्ली से प्राप्त हुई थी सब बिखर चुकी थी।

उस दिन स्कूल से आने के पश्चात जब मैं उस स्थान पर घूम रहा था जो मेरा घर हुआ करता था तो मुझे नुकसान का आभास हुआ-जो कुछ जला नहीं था वह आग बुझाने के लिए डाले गए पानी और रसायनों के कारण नष्ट हो गया था। केवल जो चीजें नष्ट नहीं हुई थीं वे फोटो एलबम, दस्तावेज और कुछ अन्य व्यक्तिगत चीजें थीं जो मेरी माँ ने वीरतापूर्वक बचा ली थी। लेकिन . मेरी बिल्ली मर चुकी थी और उसके लिए मेरे हृदय में दर्द था।
दुःखी होने का कोई वक्त नहीं था। मेरी माँ मुझे जल्दी से घर से बाहर ले गई। हमें रहने के लिए कोई स्थान ढूँढना था और मुझे स्कूल के लिए कुछ कपड़े खरीदने के लिए भी जाना था।
हमें दादा-दादी से धन उधार लेना पड़ा क्योंकि न तो पैसे निकलवाने वाले कार्ड, न नकद पैसे और बैंक से पैसे निकलवाने के लिए न ही कोई पहचान पत्र शेष बचा था। सब कुछ धुएं में उड़ चुका था।
उस सप्ताह उस मलबे को जो हमारा घर हुआ करता था को साफ किया जा रहा था। यद्यपि हमने पास में ही एक फ्लैट किराए पर ले लिया था, मैं मलबे को साफ होते देखने के लिए चला जाता था, इस आशा के साथ कि कहीं से मेरी बिल्ली मिल जाए। वह मर चुकी थी। मैं उसके बारे में उस छोटे से नाजुक जीव के रूप में सोचता रहता था। सवेरे के समय जब मैं उसे परेशान करता था वह बिस्तर से बाहर आती थी, वह मेरे पीछे-पीछे लगी रहती थी, मेरे कोट पर चढ़ जाती थी और सोने के लिए मेरी जेबों में घुस जाती थी। मुझे उसकी बहुत अधिक याद आती थी।
हमेशा ही ऐसा प्रतीत होता है कि बुरा समाचार जल्दी से फैल जाता है और मेरे वाले मामले में भी यह भिन्न नहीं था। हाई स्कूल में अध्यापकों सहित सभी को मेरी दुर्दशा के बारे में पता था। मैं परेशान था जैसे कि उस स्थिति के लिए मैं जिम्मेदार था। एक नए स्कूल में शुरुआत करने का क्या तरीका था! मैंने इस प्रकार से अपनी ओर ध्यान केंद्रित कराने के बारे में नहीं सोचा था।
अगले दिन स्कूल में लोग, हमेशा की बजाए अजीब ढंग से व्यवहार कर रहे थे। मैं अपने लॉकर के पास जिम क्लास में जाने की तैयारी कर रहा था। लोग मेरे इर्द-गिर्द एकत्र हो रहे थे, मुझे जल्दी करने के लिए कह रहे थे। मैंने इसे बड़ा विचित्र सोचा, लेकिन पिछले कुछ सप्ताह से हो रही घटनाओं की उपस्थिति में, कोई भी चीज मुझे हैरान नहीं करेगी। मुझे ऐसा लग रहा था कि वे मुझे बलपूर्वक जिम की ओर धकेलकर ले जा रहे थे तब मुझे इसका कारण पता चला। वहाँ पर एक मेज रखा था और उस पर सभी प्रकार की चीजें रखी हुई थीं और वे सिर्फ मेरे लिए थीं।
उन्होंने आपस में पैसे इकट्ठे किए थे और मेरे लिए स्कूल की चीजें, कापियाँ, सभी प्रकार के भिन्न-भिन्न वस्त्र-जींस, टॉप स्वेट सूट। यह मेरे लिए क्रिसमस के त्योहार जैसा दिन था। मैं भावुक हो गया। लोग जो पहले कभी मुझसे बोले भी नहीं थे, स्वयं का परिचय देने के लिए आगे बढ़कर मेरे पास आ रहे थे। मैंने उनके घरों के लिए सभी प्रकार के निमंत्रण प्राप्त किए। उनके द्वारा असली चिंता के प्रदर्शन ने सचमुच मेरे दिल को छू लिया।

उस क्षण मैंने सचमुच ही एक चैन की सांस ली और पहली बार यह सोचा कि अब सब कुछ ठीक होने जा रहा है। उस दिन मैंने मित्र बनाए।
एक महीने बाद, मैं अपने मकान को पुनः बनता हुआ देख रहा था। लेकिन इस बार कुछ अलग था-मैं अकेला नहीं था। इस बार मैं स्कूल के अपने दो मित्रों के साथ था। आग लगने के कारण ही मैंने स्वयं के बारे में ही सोचते रहने की आदत को बंद कर दिया। अब मैं बैठा हुआ अपने घर का पुनर्निर्माण होता देख रहा था और मैंने अनुभव किया कि मेरे जीवन का भी पुनर्निर्माण हो रहा था।
जिस समय हम वहाँ एक अवरोध पर बैठे हुए मेरे नए बैडरूम के बारे में योजनाएँ बना रहे थे, मैंने किसी को अपने पीछे से चलकर आते हुए सुना और उसने कहा, “क्या यह तुम्हारी है?” जब मैं यह देखने के लिए पीछे मुड़ा कि वह कौन था मुझे अपनी आँखों पर यकीन ही नहीं हुआ। एक महिला मेरी बिल्ली को लिए हुए खड़ी थी। मैंने छलांग लगाई और उस महिला की बांहों से उसे छीन लिया।

मैंने उसे पकड़कर अपने निकट कर लिया और उसके संतरी रंग के बालों में मैं अपना चेहरा लगाकर रो रहा था। वह (बिल्ली) खुशी से अपनी आवाज में बोली। मेरे मित्र, मुझसे और बिल्ली से चिपके हुए थे और चारों ओर उछल रहे थे।
स्पष्टतया, मेरी बिल्ली आग के कारण इतनी अधिक भयभीत हो गई थी कि वह भागकर लगभग एक मील दूर चली गई। उसके पट्टे पर हमारा टेलीफोन नंबर लिखा हुआ था, परंतु हमारे फोन नष्ट हो गए थे और उनका संपर्क कट चुका था। उस अद्भुत महिला ने उसे उठा लिया और इस बात का पता लगाने के लिए कि वह बिल्ली किसकी है उसने बहुत मेहनत की। पता नहीं कैसे उसे इस बात का आभास हो गया कि उस बिल्ली को बहुत अधिक प्यार किया जाता था और उसकी बहुत अधिक याद आती होगी।
