To keep to the one furrow,
As I do now?

The School Boy Poem Translation in Hindi

STANZA – 1

I love to rise in a summer morn,
When the birds sing on every tree;
The distant huntsman winds his horn,
And the skylark sings with me.
O! what sweet company.

Word Meaning : Winds to blow horn (फकक्कर बजाना), Horn = Kind of wind instrument, (भोंपा),Skylark = singing lark (चकोर), Distant -far away (सुदूर), Huntsman = Manager of pack of hounds (शिकारी कुत्तों का रक्षक), a person who hunts (शिकारी)।

मुझे गर्मियों की सुबह में उठना पसन्द है जब प्रत्येक वृक्ष पर पक्षी गातें हैं। दूर स्थित शिकारी कुत्तों के रक्षक की अपने भोंपे को फुककर बजाता है। और चकोर मेरे साथ गाता है। ओ! कितना मधुर संगति है।

STANZA – 2

But to go to the school in a summer morn,
O! it drives all joy away
Under a cruel eye outworn,
The little ones spend the day, In sighing and dismay.

Word Meaning : Morn = morning (सुबह), Drives = disappears (गायब कर देना),Cruel = Unkind (निर्दयी), Outworn = to gaze with anger (पैनी, दृष्टि डालना), Sighing = to breathe in grief (आहें भरना), Dismay = to fill with fear (भयभीत)।

लेकिन ग्रीष्मकालं की किसी सुबह में विद्यालय जाना। ओ! यह सारी खुशी को गायब कर देता है। एक निर्दयी और तीखी दृष्टि की देखरेख में, छोटा बालक पूरा दिन आहें भरकर और भयभीत होकर गुजार देता है।

STANZA – 3

Ah! then at times I drooping sit,
And spend many an anxious hour.
Nor in my book can I take delight,
Nor sit in learning’s bower,
Worn thro’ with the dreary shower.

Word Meaning : Drooping = to languish, (उदास होना),Anxious = restless (बेचैन), Delight – happiness (खुशी), Bower = arbour, (कुंज), Dreary – Dull (निरानन्द), Shower = (here) continuous lecture (निरंतर भाषण)।

आह। तब मैं समय-समय पर उदास होकर बैठ जाता हूँ और बहुत से बेचैनी भरे समय,गुजारता हूँ। ना मुझे अपनी पुस्तक में आनंद मिलता है और ना ही शिक्षा के कुंज में बैठकर निरानन्द सी बौछार (लेक्यर) के द्वारा बेहाल होने में।

STANZA – 4

How can the bird that is born for joy,
Sit in a cage and sing.
How can a child when fears annoy,
But droop his tender wing,
And forget his youthful spring.

Word Meaning : Joy = happiness, (खुशी), Annoy = to tease (तंग करना), Tender = soft (नाजुक)।

पक्षी जिसका जन्म आनंद मनाने के लिए हुआ है, वह किस प्रकार पिंजरे में बैठकर गीत गा सकता है। और किस प्रकार एक बालक जो तंग करने (शरारतें करने) से डरता हो खुश रह सकता है। बल्कि वह अपने पंखों को उदासी से गिरा देता है और अपने युवावस्था के बंसत को भुला देता है।

STANZA – 5

O! Father and Mother, if buds are nip’d,
And blossoms blown away,
And if the tender plants are strip’d
Of their joy in the springing day,
By sorrow and care dismay,
How shall the summer arise in joy,
Or the summer fruits appear?

Word Meaning : Buds = first leaf (कलियाँ). Nip’d = to destroy something at an early stage of its development (प्रारंभिक अवस्था में समाप्त करना). Strip’d = to deprive of covering (कवच-विहीन)।

ओ! पापा और मम्मी, यदि कलियों को तोड़ ली जाए और फूलों को गिरा दिया जाए और यदि कोमल पौधे सुरक्षा कवच से वंचित है तो बसंत के दिन की उनकी खुशी भी दुख और डर की परवाह में बदल जाती है।

किस प्रकार गर्मियों की शुरूआत खुशी से होगी और किस तरह गर्मियों के फल उत्पन्न हो सकेंगें?

Introduction:

The school boy in the poem is not a happy child. What makes him unhappy? Why does he compare himself to a bird that lives in a cage, or a plant that withers when it should blossom.

प्रस्तावना:

कविता में विद्यालय का छात्र एक खुश बालक नहीं है। क्या उसे उदास बनाता है? वह स्वयं की तुलना ऐसे पक्षी से जो कि पिंजरे में रहता है या ऐसे पौधे से जो कि मुरझा जाता है जबकि उसे खिलना चाहिए, से क्यों करता है।
