Question 1.
Do you think Umberto Eco likes being interviewed? Give reasons for your opinion.
Answer:
Yes, it appears that Umberto Eco likes being interviewed. He is interviewed by Mukund Padmanabhan from ‘The Hindu’. Some writers consider that the interview is an unwarranted intrusion into a person’s life. But Eco does not seem to think so. He waits for coming of Mukund. He answers every question asked by him with due interest. He does not boast about himself. On the other hand, he is quite modest about his achievements. He says that he writes novels only on Sundays.

When the interviewer asks him how he can do so many things, he replies that he is always doing the same thing. He is quite cooperative with the interviewer. The replies given by Eco not only show his sense of humour but also reveal the fact that he enjoys being interviewed. He talks freely of his philosophical interests. He takes pains to explain how he works in ’empty spaces. He enlightens us about his scholarly works and his famous novel ‘The Name of the Rose’. So we can say that Umberto Eco does not despise being interviewed.

Question 2.
How does Eco find the time to write so much?
Answer:
Mukund, the interviewer, refers to David Lodge who once wondered how Eco could find time to do so many things. Umberto Eco answers quite modestly. He says that he only appears to be doing so many things. But he is always doing the same thing.

Umberto Eco says that we have a lot of empty spaces in our life. He calls such spaces ‘interstices’. If these empty spaces are eliminated, the world will shrink. The universe will then be only as big as our fist. Then he tells Mukund that he always works in these empty spaces. He gives an example. He asks Mukund to suppose that he is coming over to Eco’s room to interview him.

over to Eco’s room to interview him. He is in an elevator. While Mukund is coming up, Eco is waiting for him. The time while he is waiting for his elevator to come from the first to third floor, is an empty space or an interstice. Eco has already written an article during this period.

Question 3.
What was distinctive about Eco’s academic writing style?
Answer:
Umberto Eco has written 40 scholarly works of non-fiction, but only five novels. Yet he is known more as a novel writer than for his non-fiction or academic work. His scholarly work has a certain playful and personal quality about it. It is different from the usual and regular academic style, which tends to be depersonalized and is often dry and boring.

The interviewer asks him if this style came to him naturally or if he has cultivated this informal style consciously. Eco tells him that he is different from other writers. When he presented his doctoral dissertation, his professor told him that generally scholars learn a lot of a certain subject. Then they make a lot of false hypotheses. Then they correct them. In the end, they put the conclusion.

On the contrary, Eco tells the story of his research. He mentions even his trials and errors. His professors recognized that he was right. At the age of 22, he understood that scholarly books should be written in the narrative style. This is why his essays have a narrative aspect. Eco started writing novels at the age of 50. Eco tells about his friend Roland Barthes. He was frustrated because he was an essayist and not a novelist. But Eco was first an academician. He became a novelist quite by chance.

Question 4.
Did Umberto Eco consider himself a novelist first or an academic scholar?
H.B.S.E. 2017 (Set-C)]
Answer:
Umberto Eco is a famous writer. Mukund Padmanabhan interviews him. He asks Eco about his work and style. Eco tells him that he is a professor who writes novels on Sundays. This clearly shows that novel writing is not his first choice. He is an academician and has written more than 40 scholarly books. But he has written only five novels. He tells the interviewer that he started writing novels quite late, that is, at the age of 50. He makes its clear that he ‘started writing novels by accident. He says that one day he had nothing to do and so he started writing novels. He is different from other scholars.

He does not adopt the dull and boring style for his scholarly writings. He tells the story of his researchings. He tells the story of his research. That is why his scholarly work too has a narrative quality about it. Novel writing satisfied his taste for narration. Among his scholarly works, there is a seminal piece of work on semiotics. But Eco’s fame does not depend on his academic writings. He is known as a novelist. However, Eco makes it clear that he is a academician first and novelist afterwards. He completely identifies himself with the academic community.

Question 5.
What is the reason for the huge success of Eco’s novel ‘The Name of the Rose’?
Answer:
Umberto Eco is famous for his novel “The Name of the Rose’ which was a grand success. Through this novel, the writer reaches the millions of readers. In the U.S. alone more than two million copies of the novel were sold. This is a serious kind of novel. It is a detective story at one level. But it delves deep into metaphysics, theology and medieval history. Even then the novel was a huge success. Eco says that journalists and publishers believe that people like trash or worthless stuff and do not like difficult reading experiences. But Eco does not agree with them.

His publishers had told him that his novel would probably sell about three thousand copies. But it sold between 10 and 15 million copies. Eco himself thinks that the huge success of the novel is a mystery. This success might be due to the fact that it deals with a period of medieval history. He says that. He often tells stories like a Chinese wise man.” The superb style of the novel is also one of the reasons for its grand success.

Answer:
It is true that every person has a right to his or her privacy. When a person becomes famous, people want to know about him. Then the media, whether it is print media or the electronic media, wants to exploit his or her popularity. The interviewers come to him to ask about himself, his work, his style etc. But the interviewers often cross the boundary between public and personal interests. They often ask personal or embarrassing questions. There is no doubt that when a person becomes famous, he loses some of his privacy. Yet the interviewers should not ask such questions as pertain to his very personal life, likes or dislikes. The interviewer may ask only such questions which enlighten the public about his life and work. They must not ask embarrassing questions.

Noticing Discourse Linkers And Signallers Linkers

Notice how the utterances of the interviewer and the interviewee are linked to one another. The linkers have been italicized for you.
Linking is done either through the use of reference pronouns, like ‘that’, ‘this’, ‘which’ etc. It can also be done through a repetition of words.
I am convinced 1 am always doing the same thing.
Which is?
Aah, now that is more difficult to explain. ………………………..

The use of linkers is important in all continuous stretches of text. It is very important in conversation, especially a structured conversation like an interview.

Signallers
When there are shifts in the topic the speaker usually indicates them through phrases that prepare the listener for the shift.
Notice these two examples taken from the interview:
“Which brings me to another question …..”.
“But let me tell you another story…..”
Without these preparatory signallers, the flow of ideas in a conversation will not be smooth and continuous.

Writing
If the interviewer Mukund Padmanabhan had not got the space in the newspaper to reproduce the interview verbatim, he may have been asked to produce a short report of the interview with the salient points. Write this report for him. [The teacher should be able to help the pupils in what to include and what can be omitted. We could also provide a short report of an interview as a sample.]
Answer:
An interview with Umberto Eco by Mukund Padmanabhan
New Delhi, 19th May, 20…….
Umberto Eco needs no introduction. He is an academician and a novelist. He recently shot into fame with the roaring success of his novel ‘The Name of the Rose’. Last week he was in New Delhi, in connection with a seminar. I was asked by my newspaper to interview him in his hotel. I took the appointment telephonically. As I entered his room, I found him waiting for me. As the interview began I asked Eco how he could do all the things he does.

He replied that although he appeared to be doing many different things, they were all linked with each other. He said that he worked in empty spaces or interstices. He said that while waiting for me to come up to his room, he had written an article. I asked him whether he considered himself more a novelist or an academician. He replied in good humour that he is a University professor who writes novels on Sundays. Then I referred to his famous novel “The Name of the Rose’. Eco was modest to admit that he himself had not expected such a huge success for his novel. The novel has a detective story at one level. On the other, it deals with theology, metaphysics and medieval history. He admitted that his taste for narration helped him to become a novelist.

Umberto Eco has written 40 scholarly works of non-fiction, but only five novels. Yet he is known more as novel writer for his non-fiction or academic work.

Question 9.
What did the publisher think of ‘The Name of the Rose’? [H.B.S.E. 2020 (Set-D)] (‘
Answer:
Umberto Eco took his novel “The Name of the Rose” to an American publisher for publication. She said that she loved his book. But she did not expect to sell more than 3000 copies in a country where nobody has seen a cathedral or studies Latin. So the author was given an advance for 3000 copies, but in the end, it sold two or three million in the end.

Question 10.
How did the success of Eco’s novel ‘The Name of the Rose’ go against the general opinion of public about the success of a novel?
Answer:
It is generally thought that the common people do not like serious or difficult reading experiences. But Eco’s novel ‘The Name of the Rose’ sold between ten million and 15 million copies. Yet, according to Eco, he reached only a small percentage of readers. But it is exactly this kind of readers who do not want easy reading experience. He thinks that one of the reasons for the grand success of his novel “The Name of the Rose’ may be that it deals with a period of medieval history.

Question 11.
What does Umberto Eco say about the success of his book?
Answer:
Umberto Eco says that before his book appeared, a number of books had been written about the medieval past. He says that the success of a book is always a mystery. No one can predict it. He says that if he had written his novel ten years earlier or ten years later, it would not have been the same. Why his novel succeeded at that time is a mystery.

Answer:
The Name of the Rose’ is a famous novel by Umberto Eco. This is a serious kind of novel. It is a detective story at one level. But it is deep study into metaphysics, theology and medieval history.

Question 1.
What are the different views about the interview as a form of communication?
Or
How have different writers and celebrities reacted to the concept of ‘interview’ ?
Answer:
The author says that the interview has acquired an important place in journalism. Many people believe that the interview is a source of truth and is an art. But a number of celebrities hate being interviewed. They think that it is an unwarranted intrusion in their lives. They feel that the interview makes them feel small. V.S.Naipaul believes that during an interview people lose a part of themselves. Lewis Carroll had ‘a just horror of the interviewer’ and never consented to be interviewed. Rudyard Kipling considered an interview a crime, an assault, a cowardly act and vile.

Yet Kipling had interviewed Mark Twain. H.G. Wells referred to the ‘interviewing ordeal’, but he was frequently interviewed. Once he himself interviewed Joseph Stalin, the Russian leader. Saul Bellow, the American writer, was frequently interviewed. He once described interviews as being like thumbprints on his windpipe. Yet despite its drawbacks, the interview is a good medium of communication. According to Denis Brian, more than in any other time, our most vivid impressions of our contemporaries are through the interviews. The interviewer holds a position of power and influence.

Question 2.
What does Umberto Eco say when the interviewer wonders how he can do so many things?
Answer:
The second part of the lesson is an extract from the interview of Umberto Eco. The interviewer is Mukund Padmanabhan from ‘The Hindu.’ Mukund asks Eco how he is able to do so many things. Eco replies modestly that he only appears to be doing so many things. But he is always doing the same thing. He says that he has some philosophical interests. He pursues these interests through his novels and his academic work. He shows these interests in his books for children which are about non-violence and peace. Then Eco tells the interviewer his secret.

He says that we all have a lot of empty spaces in our lives. He calls such spaces ‘interstices’. If these empty spaces are eliminated, the world will shrink. The universe will then be only as big as our fist. He gives Mukund an example. He asks him to suppose that he is coming to Eco’s place. The time during which Eco is waiting for Mukund is an interstice or an empty space. Eco says that he works in such empty spaces. Eco tells him that he has already written an article while waiting for him.

Question 3.
What do we know about the style of Umberto Eco’s writing, from this interview?
Answer:
The interviewer asks Umberto Eco why the style of his scholarly work and his non-fictional writing has a personal and peculiar quality to it. In reply, Eco recalls the time when he submitted his first doctoral dissertation in Italy. Then one of his professors had commented that scholars learn a lot of a certain subject. Then they make a lot of hypotheses and correct them, and at the end, they put the conclusions. On the contrary, Eco had told the story of his research, including even his trials and errors.

At the same time, however, the professor had recognized that Eco was right. Eco told the interviewer that at that time, at the age of twenty-two, he had understood that scholarly books should be written by telling the story of the research. That is why Eco’s essays always have a narrative aspect. He has written 40 scholarly works of non-fiction, but only five novels. He started writing novels at the age of fifty. He says that novels satisfy his taste for narration. Then the interviewer, asks him if it bothers him when most people recognize him as a novelist only. Eco says that it does not bother him because he considers himself a university professor who writes novels on Sundays.

Question 4.
What does this interview tell us about Umberto Eco’s novel ‘The Name of the Rose’?
Answer:
The interview talks about Eco’s famous ‘The Name of the Rose’. It is a very serious novel. It is a detective story at one level, but it is also a deep study into metaphysics, theology and medieval history. Yet it turned out to be a huge success. Mukund asks Eco if he was puzzled by its unexpected success. Eco says that he was not puzzled, but the journalists and publishers were puzzled. It is generally thought that the common people do not like serious or difficult reading experiences. Yet, according to Eco, he reached only a small percentage of readers. But it is exactly this kind of readers who do not want easy reading experiences. They like the poor quality. ‘The Name of the Rose’ sold between ten million and 15 million copies.

Mukund wants to know if the grand success of his novel ‘The Name of the Rose’ is due to the fact that it deals with a period of medieval history. Eco says that he often tells stories like a Chinese wise man. He says that before his book appeared, a number of books had been written about the medieval past. He thinks that the success of a book is always a mystery. No one can predict it. He says that if he had written his novel ten years earlier or ten years later, it would not have been the same. Why his novel succeeded at that time is a mystery.

The Interview Summary

In the first part of the lesson, the author says that the interview has acquired an important place in journalism. Over the years, several thousand celebrities have been interviewed. Many people believe that the interview is a source of truth and is an art. But a number of celebrities hate being interviewed. They think that it is an unwarranted intrusion in their lives. They feel that the interview makes them feel small. V.S.Naipaul believes that during an interview people lose a part of themselves.

Lewis Carroll had a just horror of the interviewer’ and never consented to be interviewed. Rudyard Kipling considered an interview a crime, an assault, a cowardly act and vile. Yet Kipling had interviewed Mark Twain. H.G.Wells referred to the ‘interviewing ordeal, but he was frequently interviewed.

Once he himself interviewed Joseph Stalin, the Russian leader. Saul Bellow, the American writer, was frequently interviewed. He once described interviews as being like thumbprints on his windpipe. Yet despite its drawbacks, the interview a good medium of communication. According to Denis Brian, more than in any other time, our most vivid impressions of our contemporaries are through the interviews. The interviewer holds a position of power and influence.

The second part of the lesson is an extract from the interview of Umberto Eco. The interviewer is Mukund Padmanabhan from ‘The Hindu’. Mukund asks Eco how he is able to do so many things. Eco replies that he has some philosophical interests. He pursues these interest through his novels and his academic work. He shows these interests in his books for children which are about non-violence and peace.

Then Eco tells the interviewer his secret. He says that we all have a lot of ’empty spaces’ in our lives. He calls them ‘interstices’. He gives Mukund an example. He asks him to suppose that he is coming to Eco’s place. The time during which Eco is waiting for Mukund is an interstice, or an empty space. Eco says that he works in such empty spaces. Eco tells him that he has already written an article while waiting for him.

Eco published his dissertation in a book form.

He says that only novels satisfy his taste for narration. Mukund, the interviewer, asks him if it bothers him when most people recognise him as a novelist only. Eco says that it does not bother him because he considers himself a university professor who writes novels on Sundays.

Then Mukund talks about Eco’s famous ‘The Name of the Rose’. It is generally thought that the common people do not like serious or difficult reading experience. They like the poor quality. “The Name of the Rose’ sold between ten million and 15 million copies.

HBSE 12th Class English Solutions Flamingo Chapter 7 The Interview

Yet, according to Eco, he reached only a small percentage of readers. But it is exactly this kind of readers who do not want easy reading experiences. Mukund wants to know if the grand success of his novel “The Name of the Rose’ is due to the fact that it deals with a period of medieval history.

The Interview Translation in Hindi

Since its invention a little over 130 years ago, the interview has become a common place of journalism. Today, almost everybody who is literate will have read an interview at some point in their lives, while from the other point of view, several thousand celebrities have been interviewed over the years, some of them repeatedly. So it is hardly surprising that opinions of the interview-of its functions, methods and merits vary considerably. Some might make quite extravagant claims for it as being, in its highest form, a source of truth, and, in its practice, an art. Others, usually celebrities who see themselves as its victims, might despise the interview as an unwarranted intrusion into their lives, or feel that it somehow diminishes them, just as in some primitive cultures it is believed that if one takes a photographic portrait of somebody then one is stealing that person’s soul.

V.S. Naipaul ‘feels that some people are wounded by interviews and lose a part of themselves, Lewis Carroll, the creator of Alice in Wonderland, was said to have had ‘a just horror of the interviewer’ and he never consented to be interviewed – It was his horror of being lionized which made him thus repel would be acquaintances, interviewers, and the persistent petitioners for his autograph and he would afterwards relate the stories of his success in silencing all such people with much satisfaction and amusement. Rudyard Kipling expressed an even more condemnatory attitude towards the interviewer. His wife, Caroline, writes in her diary for 14 October 1892 that their day was ‘wrecked by two reporters from Boston’.

She reports her husband as saying to the reporters, ‘Why do I refuse to be interviewed? Because it is immoral! It is a crime, just as much of a crime as an offence against my person, as an assault, and just as much merits punishment. It is cowardly and vile. No respectable man would ask it, much less give it,’ Yet Kipling had himself perpetrated such an ‘assault’ on Mark Twain only a few years before. H.G. Wells in an interview in 1894 referred to the interviewing ordeal, but was a fairly frequent interviewee and forty years later found himself interviewing Joseph Stalin. Saul Bellow, who has consented to be interviewed on several occasions, nevertheless once described interviews as being like thumbprints on his windpipe.

Yet despite the drawbacks of the interview, it is a supremely serviceable medium of communication. “These days, more than at any other time, our most vivid impressions of our contemporaries are through interviews,” Denis Brian has written. “Almost everything of moment reaches us through one man asking questions of another. Because of this, the interviewer holds a position of unprecedented power and influence”.

HBSE 12th Class English Solutions Flamingo Chapter 7 The Interview

“I am a professor who writes novels on Sundays”-Umberto Eco The following is an extract from an interview of Umberto Eco. The interviewer is Mukund Padmanabhan from The ‘Hindu’. Umberto Eco, a professor at the University of Bologna in Italy had already acquired a formidable reputation as a scholar for his ideas on semiotics (the study of signs), literary interpretation, and medieval aesthetics before he turned to writing fiction. Literary fiction, academic texts, essays, children’s books, newspaper articles — his written output is staggeringly large and wide-ranging. In 1980, he acquired the equivalent of intellectual superstardom with the publication of the Name of the Rose, which sold more than 10 million copies.

Mukund: The English novelist and academic David Lodge once remarked, “I can’t understand how one man can do all the things he [Eco] does.”
Umberto Eco: Maybe I give the impression of doing many things. But in the end, I am convinced I am always doing the same thing.
Mukund : Which is ?

Umberto Eco: Aah, now that is more difficult to explain. I have some philosophical interests and I pursue them through my academic work and my novels. Even my books for children are about non-violence and peace…you see, the same bunch of ethical, philosophical interests. And then I have a secret. Did you know what will happen if you eliminate the empty spaces from the universe, eliminate the empty spaces in all the atoms? The universe will become as big as my fist.

Similarly, we have a lot of empty spaces in our lives. I call them interstices. Say you are coming over to my place. You are in an elevator and while you are coming up, I am waiting for you. This is an interstice, an empty space. I work in empty spaces. While waiting for your elevator to come up from the first to the third floor, I have already written an article! (Laughs).

Mukund: Not everyone can do that of course. Your non-fictional writing, your scholarly work has a certain playful and personal quality about it. It is a marked departure from a regular academic style – which is invariably depersonalized and often dry and boring. Have you consciously adopted an informal approach or is it something that just came naturally to you?

Umberto Eco: When I presented my first Doctoral dissertation in Italy, one of the Professors said, “Scholars learn a lot of a certain subject, then they make a lot of false hypotheses, then they correct them and at the end, they put the conclusions. You, on the contrary, told the story of your research. Even including your trials and errors.” At the same time, he recognized I was right and went on to publish my dissertation as a book, which meant he appreciated it.

At that point, at the age of 22, I understood scholarly books should be written the way I had done – by telling the story of the research. This is why my essays always have a narrative aspect. And this is why probably I started writing narratives [novels] so late – at the age of 50, more or less.

I remember that my dear friend Roland Barthes was always frustrated that he was an essayist and not a novelist. He wanted to do creative writing one day or another but he died before he could do so. I never felt this kind of frustration. I started writing novels by accident. I had nothing to do one day and so I started. Novels probably satisfied my taste for narration.

Mukund: Talking about novels, from being a famous academic you went on to becoming spectacularly famous after the publication of The Name of the Rose. You’ve written five novels against many more scholarly works of non-fiction, at least more than 20 of them…
Umberto Eco : Over 40.

Mukund: Over 40! Among them a seminal piece of work on semiotics. But ask most people about Umberto Eco and they will say, “Oh, he’s the novelist.” Does that bother you?

Umberto Eco: Yes. Because I consider myself a university professor who writes novels on Sundays. It’s not a joke. I participate in academic conferences and not meetings of Pen Clubs and writers. I identify myself with the academic community. But okay, if they [most people) have read only the novels… (laughs and shrugs). I know that by writing novels, I reach a larger audience. I cannot expect to have one million readers with stuff on semiotics.

Mukund : Which brings me to my next question. The Name of the Rose is a very serious novel. It’s a detective yarn at one level but it also delves into metaphysics, theology, and medieval history. Yet it enjoyed a huge mass audience. Were you puzzled at all by this?(मुकुन्द : यह बात मुझे मेरे अगले प्रश्न पर ले आती है।

Umberto Eco: No. Journalists are puzzled. And sometimes publishers. And this is because journalists and publishers believe that people like trash and don’t like difficult reading experiences. Consider there are six billion people on this planet. The Name of the Rose sold between 10 and 15 million copies. So in a way I reached only a small percentage of readers. But it is exactly these kinds of readers who don’t want easy experiences. Or at least don’t always want this. I myself, at 9 p.m. after dinner, watch television and want to see either ‘Miami Vice’ or ‘Emergency Room’. I enjoy it and I need it. But not all day.

Mukund: Could the huge success of the novel have anything to do with the fact that it dealt with a period of medieval history that…
Umberto Eco: That’s possible. But let me tell you another story because I often tell stories like a Chinese wise man. My American publisher said while she loved my book, she didn’t expect to sell more than 3,000 copies in a country where nobody has seen a cathedral or studied Latin. So I was given an advance for 3,000 copies, but in the end, it sold two or three million in the U.S.
A lot of books have been written about the medieval past far before mine. I think the success of the book is a mystery. Nobody can predict it. I think if I had written The Name of the Rose ten years earlier or ten years later, it wouldn’t have been the same. Why it worked at that time is a mystery.
