Long Answer Type Questions

Question 1.
What do you mean by social division? When do social divisions take place in society? Describe with suitable examples.
Answer:
A social difference refers to the difference in a group of people due to their caste, race, religion, culture, language, region and sex, etc. It becomes a social division, when some social differences combine with another set of differences.

Social takes place under the following circumstances:

  • Social division dueto overlapping differences.
  • Social division due to cross-cutting differences.
  • Social division due to migration.

(i) Social division due to Overlapping differences: Some of the social differences overlap other differences, for instance, the differences between the Blacks and the Whites of United States of America (USA). In the USA, due to these circumstances ifiacks are poor, homeless and generally discriminated against. In our country, Dulits tend to be poor and landless. They generally face social injustice and discrimination.
A situation of this kind produces social divisions, when one kind of social difference becomes more important than the other and people start feeling that they belong to difThrent communities.

(ii) Social Division due to Cross-cutting Social Differences:
It means the groups that share a common interest on one issue are likely to be on different sides on different issues. For example, Northern Ireland and Netherlands both are mainly Christian countries, but divided between Catholics and Protestants. In Northern Ireland, class and religion overlap with each other while in Netherlands, class and religion tend to cut across each other.

HBSE 10th Class Social Science Important Questions Civics Chapter 3 Democracy and Diversity

(iii) Social Division due to Migration: Sometimes, there is division or difference in society due to migration and migrants. Even, countries like Sweden and Germany, that were once highly homogenous, are undergoing rapid change with infusion of people from other parts of the world. Migrants bring with them their own culture and tend to form a different social community. In this sense, most countries of the world are multicultural and have multi-dimensional social divisions.

Question 2.
How do social divisions affect politics? Explain with an example.
Answer:
Democracy involves competition among various political parties which is turn divides a society. In fact social diversities can turn into political division thereby leading to conflict and violence and disintegration of society (country). This happened in many countries.
For example:
Northern Ireland: This region of UK has been for many years the site of violent and bitter ethnopolitical conflict. Its population is divided into 2 major groups of Christianity- 53% of its population is protestant represented by Unionists who wanted to remain in UK which is predominantly protestant) and 44% of the population is Roman Catholic crepresented by Nationalist parties who demanded that the Northern Ireland should be unified with the Republic of Ireland (which is predominantly a Catholic country).

Hundreds of civilians militants and security forces of the UK and the Nationalists died in the ensuring Civil War. It was only in 1998, that the UK government and the nationalists reached a peace treaty after which the latter suspended their armed struggle.

Yugoslavia: Political competition along religious and ethnic lines led to the disintegration of Yugoslavia into six independent countries.

India: Social divisions affect voting in most constituencies. People from one community tend to prefer some party more than others. In many states there are parties that focus only on the community. Yet, all this does not lead to the disintegration of the country.

HBSE 10th Class Social Science Important Questions Civics Chapter 3 Democracy and Diversity

Question 3.
‘Democracy is the best way to fight for recognition and also to accommodate diversity. Discuss.
Answer:
It is correct that democracy is the best way to fight for recognition and also to accommodate diversity. But there is a problem, that a ‘positive attitude towards diversity and ‘willingness to accommodate’ do not come easily. Peaceful and Constitutional Way: Sometimes, people feel deprived and discriminated. They have to fight against injustice. Generally, they start their fight in a peaceful or constitutional manner. Such a fight often takes the democratic path. They try to get a fair position through elections.

Path of Violence: Sometimes, social differences create large social inequalities. The struggle against such inequalities often takes the path of violence. This cannot be justified on any ground. The path of violence only creates bloodshed and mistrust among the people. It is against the democratic spirit, and leads only to disaster and disintegration of the country. However, the path of violence cannot be justified on any grounds. History shows that democracy is the only and the best way to resolve and accommodate any kind of social diversity or division.

Question 4.
Explain the origin of social differences.
Answer:
Origins of Social differences:
Accident of birth:
We don’t choose to belong to our community. We belong to it simply because we were bom into it. We experience social differences based on accident of birth in our everyday life.

Based on choices:
Some of the differences are based on our choices. Some people are atheists. They don’t believe in God or any religion. Some people choose to follow a religion other than the one in which they were bom. Most of us choose to study a subject of our interest and an occupation where we can excel. All these lead to formation of social groups that are based on our choices.

For example:
Nagaland, Uttarakhand and Jharkhand. Restructuring of centre-state relations: The constitutional arrangements for sharing power depends on how the ruling parties and leaders follow these arrangements. For a long time, the same party ruled both at the centre and in most of the states. Post- 1990 saw the rise of regional parties. Since no single party got a clear majority in the Lok Sabha, the national parties had to enter into an alliance which led to a new culture of power sharing and respect for autonomy of state governments
